Roundtable No°2 | 2024: Participatory implementation for a digital healthcare system

Note: The next roundtable will take place on 18 April on the topic of "Security in Focus: Data Protection and Cybersecurity in Patient Monitoring" in English. If you are interested, please register here

At the second Patient Monitoring Roundtable 2024, we have set ourselves a lot of goals under the promising motto "Together for innovation: Participatory implementation for a digital healthcare system". At a time when the digitalisation of the healthcare system is progressing rapidly, a particularly large number of committed participants came together this time to discuss new solutions through participatory implementation.

In the first half, keynotes by special guest Sarah Weschke from the Berlin Institute of Health and Alessia Nowak and PD Dr Akira Poncette from Charité's Institute of Medical Informatics laid the foundation for an in-depth discussion. Watch the recording of the presentations here. Specific challenges and opportunities of digitalisation in the healthcare sector were then discussed in small groups. The results offer a variety of insights, concerns and positive outlooks.

Keynote on applied clinical implementation science

The following take-home messages were identified:

Current status and challenges in the implementation of technologies and processes in the healthcare sector:

  • Lack of structure combined with a lack of flexibility: the currently prevailing top-down approach with little participation by those involved leads to unclear processes and a lack of standards.

  • Isolated positive examples: Examples such as annual surveys to analyse requirements, the establishment of specialist groups and test phases show that a participatory approach is feasible and promising.

Opportunities arising from the implementation of new technologies:

  • New interdisciplinary professional models for healthcare professionals: involving clinical users:inside in product development at an early stage can shorten the innovation cycle and increase acceptance of new technologies.

  • Multivendor implementation guide for medical devices: The development and application of a standardised guideline could promise a higher rate of successful implementation of digital technologies

Basic requirements for successful implementation:

  • Build understanding of problems and users: A deep understanding of the pain points and characteristics of the user groups is essential.

  • Create trust: Establishing effective communication structures and feedback channels as well as a culture that promotes appreciation and the ability to take criticism are essential.

The roundtable clearly showed that participatory implementation in digital healthcare is not only desirable, but also necessary. By bringing together different perspectives and jointly striving for improvements, the challenges of digitalisation can be overcome and its opportunities exploited.

The key to success lies in collaboration: from development and implementation through to the use of digital technologies. Only in this way can we ensure that the digital healthcare system meets the needs of all stakeholders and improves care instead of creating new hurdles. We would like to thank all participants for bringing us a step closer to this goal together!

The Patient Monitoring Roundtable is organized and conducted by INCH e.V. (Initiative for Innovation and Collaboration in Healthcare e.V.) in cooperation with the Institute for Medical Informatics at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
